These meetings, held once a month, are an excellent opportunity to learn about trail projects, park news and events. At this month’s meeting we will be discussing trail work opportunities, a potential partnership with other non-profits to help maintain trails at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, and updates from the new Sonoma County Parks Alliance, a group working to address the threatened State Park closures (which includes our local Annadel, Sugarloaf, Jack London and Austin Creek Parks). We recently modified the meeting agenda (attached) to encourage more community attendance. The first part of the meeting will cover projects, advocacy and news. You are also welcome to stay for the second part of the meeting, which will focus on SCTC organizational business.

Interested in becoming involved in building more sustainable trails, multi-use access (hikers, bikers, runners and equestrians), and park advocacy? We encourage you to contact us! The Sonoma County Trails Council is looking to expand its Board of Directors. The election of next year’s Board will be at the Annual SCTC Membership meeting and dinner on November 8th (see details below).

The elected Board members support the Trails Council by attending monthly meetings, providing direction to the Executive Director, and setting the organization’s goals. If you’d also like to use a pulaski or help with fundraising, all the better!

With all parks in Sonoma County facing limited to non-existent resources, non-profit organizations like the Trails Council need to take on a larger role. As a Trails Council Board Member there will be opportunities to help create a long-term solution to these challenges so we can build, maintain and advocate for trails for all users!

To submit a nomination for the ballot or to find out more, contact Executive Director Ken Wells. We would like to hear from potential candidates and have all nominations in by October 24, 2011.

SCTC’s Annual Membership Meeting will be held on November 8, 2011 at 6:00 pm at the Sonoma Driving and Riding Club on Aston Ave., just inside the south gate at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa. Dave Gould, Director of the Sonoma County Parks Alliance, will be the guest speaker. SCTC Members only, you can join at the door. Dinner and beverages provided and…new members receive free t-shirt.

At our Sept. 28 Board of Directors meeting, we said farewell to Stephen Smith, who has served as Treasurer for most of the past four years. Stephen has been a manager at the Santa Rosa REI and is transferring to the Seattle REI. During his time with the Trails Council, Stephen has been a great asset, most visibly as head chef for events such as the Trails Jamboree. We wish Stephen best of luck in Seattle and we’ll miss him!

With Stephen’s departure, Board member Jen Picard has offered to step into the Treasurer position. Georgiana Hale is currently Secretary and also the membership coordinator.

We lost another Board member, Ken Wells, on Sept. 28th, but his resignation was to allow him to take on the position of Executive Director — a position that has been vacant since our former ED, Rob Helms, resigned in 2009. Ken has been charged by the Board with completing a number of projects that have been delayed for a variety of reasons, including branding our tool trailer, getting our new brochures out, and creating a new banner for events. Ken will also work on membership development and continue to represent the Trails Council in the Taylor Mountain planning process.

Finally, we have discontinued our phone number due low use and will rely solely on email contact only.

A big thanks to everyone who came out for The Trails Council’s annual membership meeting on Nov.17! Attendance on Nov. 17 was a little lower than we’d hope — perhaps due to the heavy rain — but those who made it had a good food and drink, great door prizes and heard an excellent presentation, “Maximizing the Community Value of Trails” by Randy Martin, professional trail designer and builder.

Swoopy Trails

Randy’s firm, Trailscape, has completed trail projects in the Sierra foothills, Susanville, CA, and most recently, Jamaica. Randy spoke on how well designed and built trails provide value to communities as they satisfy the growing demand for outdoor recreation while providing an experience with nature that feeds the heart and soul. In Randy’s experience, trails with a relatively low overall grade (4-6%) and short, steeper grade reversals create undulating trails that are durable and more enjoyable for all users. Through slides and videos, he demonstrated how this design worked in a number of settings, with a focus on a single track trail recently completed near Susanville and his project in Jamaica.

Randy has more videos from these and other projects on YouTube.

Elections and Swag

After a brief presentation of the year’s accomplishments and events, accompanied by trail project photos courtesy of Tim Mayer, the entire Board of Directors was reelected (thank you!). And thanks to our sponsors, REI, Sonoma Bicycle Company and Fly Goat Coffee, almost all attendees came away with a door prize, including a Giro helmet and Sonoma Bicycle Company gift certificates, a sleeping bag, backpack, jackets, premium coffee and more. Finally, a big thanks to all the members of the Board for putting together a great evening!
