Did you know that two perennial creeks flow through Sebastopol? If you missed last year’s Watersheds Walk, take a hike on Saturday, Feb. 26 and get to know the topography and history of Sebastopol’s watersheds on this 5.5 mile walk that explores the sometimes hidden paths of Calder and Zimpher creeks as they travel to the Laguna de Santa Rosa. We’ll wander through several parks, visit an artesian well, and take a look at how Sebastopol’s storm sewer system relates to our creeks.

Confluence of Calder Creek and the Laguna de Santa Rosa

The walk begins at the Sebastopol Plaza (Petaluma Ave. and McKinley St.) at 9am. Wear comfortable shoes, a hat, and bring water, sunscreen and a snack. Heavy rain cancels. After the walk some of the group may wish to have lunch at a Sebastopol restaurant. Leaders for this walk are Geoffrey Skinner and biologist Joan Schwan.

This walk is part of a series of walks around the City of Sebastopol — and one of many walks throughout Sonoma County now listed on the iWalk Sonoma website. iWalk Sonoma is a project of Healthy Sonoma 2020.

Calder Creek needs your help! This spring-fed creek, which runs through Ives Park in Sebastopol, along the Joe Rodota Trail and into the Laguna de Santa Rosa, is in need of some TLC. Join the Sebastopol Creek Stewards from 9 to noon on Saturday, March 5 for a morning of trash cleanup and exotic invasive removal around the creek in the Railroad Forest.

Meet at the City parking lot on Petaluma Avenue across from the bike trail. Wear old clothes, rubber boots and gloves. Waders may also be helpful if you have them. We’ll have trash grabbers and some other tools to share, but if you have loppers or pruners, please bring them along. Children are welcome!

Last year we also did some cleanup of the nearby Laguna by kayak. If you have a boat and would like to bring it, contact us for details.

Contact Joan Schwan or Geoffrey Skinner to RSVP (823-0446, jschwan [at] sonic.net or skinnerbird [at] gmail.com).
