Nattkemper Trail work party — Saturday June 11th

Sat., June 11 – (re-scheduled because of rain) — National Trails Day at Hood
Mountain Regional Park.

Co-sponsored by Sonoma County Regional Parks.

Sierra Club volunteers built the Nattkemper Trail. We need your help to keep it in good repair. Bring lunch, liquids, gloves, hiking boots, snacks, and daypack. We have tools. You will be carrying a tool about one mile to the workplace. We always have fun and the work is rewarding. This is a steep single track trail. By reservation only.

Carpools: Meet 8:30 on Adobe Canyon Rd. on the right after turning off Hwy 12 toward Sugarloaf Park (close to Vineyards Restaurant) leave 8:45. We will finish around 3:30 but that varies. If you have to leave earlier you could hike out.

Hood Mountain Workday, March 8

Well, we’ll try it again! On Tuesday, March 8, is our next regularly scheduled work day at Hood Mtn. Hopefully the weather will cooperate better this time. Please wear weather appropriate clothing, bring liquids, lunch and gloves. Meet at 9:00AM at the Pythian Rd parking lot 1.5 miles north of Hwy 12. Parking passes, all tools and instruction, snacks and refreshments will be provided by Regional Parks. Please contact Dave Chalk or John Ryan if you’re able to attend. As before, if the work day is cancelled due to bad weather we’ll notify you by email.

John Ryan, Volunteer Coordinator for Sonoma County Regional Parks, has called off the workday scheduled for today due to predicted cold, wet weather. The next workday is scheduled for Tuesday, March 8^th. He hopes for better weather.

Another upcoming trail stewardship opportunity from Regional Parks:

Hood Mountain Regional Park, 1450 Pythian Road, Santa Rosa, CA

Thursday, February 24^th from 9am – 1pm

Join us as we return to Hood Mountain for some winter clean up. The trails, especially the summit trail, could use some help. We’ll be pruning back brush, cleaning out water bars and dips and dealing with other winter erosion concerns. Meet in the parking lot off of Highway 12 on Pythian Road. Hood Mountain Workdays, Spring 2011

John Ryan, Volunteer Coordinator for Sonoma County Regional Parks, has announced the spring workdays for Hood Mountain Regional Park:

Thursday, February 24^th
Tuesday, March 8^th

Saturday, June 4^th National Trail Days

All work will run from 9:00AM – 1:00PM. Parking passes, tools, instruction, supervision, snacks, encouragement, and major appreciation will be provided by Regional Parks. Please meet at the Pythian Rd parking lot, 1.5 miles north of Hwy 12, at 8:50AM. Transportation to the work site will be provided, weather permitting.

Final Hood Mountain Trail Work for 2010 — Postponed

Due to weather concerns, the trail work at Hood Mountain Regional Park has been postponed until there have been enough dry days to permit a 4WD vehicle to access the worksite. The rescheduled work day will likely take place on a mid week day.

Final Hood Mountain Trail Work for 2010

Dave Chalk reports:

We’re ready to close out 2010 trail work in grand style. The Azalea Creek backpacking sites on the Hood Mountain Trail have been closed since 1985. And now we’re almost ready to re-open them. We need one more good day and then hopefully we’ll be done.

John Ryan & I have chosen two potential dates: Thurs Dec 2 is the main date. If weather precludes that date then we’ll go with Tues Dec 7. Plan to meet at the Pythian Rd parking lot at 9:00AM. We should have transportation at least to the landing on the Hood Mtn Trail. Bring your usual gear as well as lunch & liquids. We’ll try to wrap up by 1:00PM. If Dec 2 looks bad weather wise, I’ll notify everyone and we’ll shoot for Dec 7.

Please let Dave know if you can make the Dec 2 date.

Saturday, Oct. 2 Trail Work at Hood Mountain — POSTPONED

The final day of the scheduled work to complete work at the Azalea Creek and Merganser Pond backpacking sites in Hood Mountain Regional Park has been postponed due to a lack of volunteers. John Ryan, the Sonoma County Regional Parks volunteer coordinator will reschedule the event for a weekday later in October.

Final Workdays on Hood Mountain’s Azalea Creek and Merganser Pond Backpacking Sites

We are in the final stretch with regards to work at the Azalea Creek and Merganser Pond backpacking sites. There’s one more workday in September and a final one in October. They should do the trick. After that the sites will open. There isn’t yet a firm date as to when the grand opening will occur but it is moving forward. Thanks so much for all of your support these past several years.

Hood Mountain Backpacking Site Workdays

Tuesday, September 28th from 9am – 1pm
Saturday, October 2nd from 9am – 1pm.

Directions: Meet in the Pythian Road parking lot.

Take Hwy 12 East from Santa Rosa toward Kenwood. Turn left onto Pythian Road (Pythian Road will be the first stoplight you encounter after you pass the main Oakmont entrance.) After about 100 yards, Pythian Road forks. Stay to your right. The road becomes wooded and then you pass through a yellow gate. Stay on the road and you will come to the parking lot in about a 1/4 of a mile.

Hood Mountain workdays notes from Dave Chalk: All workdays are from 9am to 1pm. Most of the upcoming workdays will focus on finishing off the Merganser pond backpacking sites. Once those are completed we will move up and over the mountain to the second backpacking site located at Azalea Creek. This backpacking site has been around since the 1970s but hasn’t been open to the public since the 80s. It won’t need anywhere near the work put into Merganser. It’s basically all set to go with just a couple of workdays needed to spruce it up. Contact John Ryan (565-3356) for more information.
