Inspired by the Art Nouveau styles of the early 20th century, these posters remind us of a time when CA Parks grew and prospered. All posters are 12″ x 17″, aqueous color prints on premium acid-free recycled matte paper.

About Parks Alliance:

In May 2011, the State of California announced the upcoming closure of 70 State Parks, which means the state will remove it’s staff and resources from the Parks as of July 1, 2012. Sonoma County was disproportionately hit by the closure list, with 5 of the 70 parks located here. The State Parks on the closure list not only provide recreation opportunities, camping and access to the outdoors for county residents, but are vital pieces of California history.

We invite all Sonoma County Trails Council supporters to join us at the upcoming Sonoma County Trails Council board meeting on Tuesday, Sept 20th at 6 pm at the Bike Monkey office (640 3rd Street in downtown Santa Rosa, Suite #C).

These meetings, held once a month, are an excellent opportunity to learn about trail projects, park news and events. At this month’s meeting we will be discussing trail work opportunities, trail projects at Annadel State Park, and the new Sonoma County Parks Alliance, a group working to address the threatened State Park closures (which includes our local Annadel, Sugarloaf, Jack London and Austin Creek Parks).

We recently modified the meeting agenda to encourage more community attendance. The first part of the meeting will cover projects, advocacy and news. You are also welcome to stay for the second part of the meeting, which will focus on SCTC organizational business.

Please contact us if you’d like more information about SCTC and the upcoming meetings. I hope you’ll join us!

The next Sonoma County Trails Council trail work day to help repair the trails at Annadel State Park is next Friday, August 26, from 9am to about noon. We will be continuing to work on the causeway to fix the mud bog 1/5 mile up the N. Burma trail.

Meet us at 9am at the bottom of North Burma Trail at Channel Drive. Look for the white SCTC tool trailer. We will have parking passes for those that drive and there should be adequate parking in that general area.

As always, remember to wear boots or sturdy shoes, bring gloves (SCTC has some if you don’t), sunscreen, and water.

In order to make sure we have enough tools and beverages, please contact us if you plan to attend. We’ll also be happy to answer any questions you might have.

We look forward to seeing you and having fun taking care of our wonderful park.

We are completely full for this Saturday’s trail stewardship event with REI and the Sonoma County Trails Council as we repair and improve a segment of North Burma Trail! This popular trail suffers from erosion in a number of places and one of the worst is just below a stream crossing roughly 100 yards above the end of the trail at Channel Drive. We will put down gravel and drains to keep the tread in place, similar to our 2009 project on Spring Creek Trail.

If you would like to join us for future events, please let us know — we’ll be working on this and other projects throughout Annadel on the 3rd Saturday of each month through November. Tell us which dates work for you and we’ll send out details shortly before the event(s).

Together we will help repair the trails we use and love.

Hundreds of runners hit the trails at Annadel on Feb. 7 to raise money for the park. The 13.1 mile race was organized by the staff of Santa Rosa’s Fleet Feet Sports to support Annadel State Park in the attempt to “thwart partial and/or full park closure.” The looping course through the western portion of the park brought in about $20,000 that will go to the park through the Valley of the Moon Natural Natural History Association, a nonprofit set up to raise funds for Sonoma County parks.

Hikers on a fundraising 5-mile hike from the start at Spring Lake to Lake Ilsanjo followed the runners, traveling by way of the recent Trails Council project on Spring Creek trail.

The organizers have posted many photos and other information on the race website.

The Sonoma Land Trust announced on Dec. 17 that escrow closed on the stunning 5,630-acre Jenner Headlands — a nationally significant project and the single largest conservation land acquisition in Sonoma County. This $36 million purchase from willing sellers Sonoma Coast Associates, Gualala Redwoods, Inc., and Russian River Redwoods was completed due to the extraordinary efforts and collaboration of 10 public and private funding partners. Sonoma Land Trust is now the proud steward of this incredible coastal property.

Eventually the property will include a section of the California Coastal Trail as well as other trails. While the interim public access plan is being developed, the Land Trust will begin conducting guided hikes in January 2010. From January–March, SLT will offer a hike each month along the coastal headlands. This strenuous 3.5-mile roundtrip hike will ascend more than 700 feet in elevation to a rocky hilltop within the coastal prairie portion of the Headlands. Along the way, hikers will be greeted with dazzling views of the Sonoma Coast (on clear days!). Although this route will follow old ranch roads, some sections are especially rough with uneven footing. This hike is not for inexperienced hikers — you must be in good physical condition and sturdy hiking boots with ankle support are strongly recommended.

Now that we have had some rain and the soil is workable we want to begin the long-awaited Spring Creek Trail project. The site, which is about half a mile up the trail from the intersection of the Spring Creek and Canyon trails, is a wet muddy mess in the winter, and we hope to build a long-lasting repair with short sections of causeways.

This summer we hauled rock and tread mix up to the project site, so some of the heavy work has already been done. Now we would like to get together a crew of 6 or 8 to actually build the project. The work will consist of preparing the trail bed with McLeods and mattocks, moving rock and tread mix in wheelbarrows for a short distance (50 to 100 feet, generally downhill), placing materials (fabric, border rocks, drain rock, and tread mix), and finally compacting the surface. We plan to begin work on Saturday, October 31. This trail is gets a lot of use, and we don’t want to leave the project unfinished, so those who can will work on Sunday, Nov 1 as well.

If the weather doesn’t cooperate for the 31st or 1st, we’ll try again the following weekend, Nov. 7th and/or 8th.

Leader for this project is Tim Mayer. Please contact Tim directly to sign up for either (or both) days.
